Where to stay at the Grand Canyon South Rim in 2026

The park concessioners' lodging in the park has been suspended since 31 August 2026 because flood damage destroyed the water intake and damaged the water line. That affects the lodges in Grand Canyon Village. Tusayan lies outside the park and is not affected. Phantom Ranch is closed too, so for now the practical bases are Tusayan, Valle, Williams and Flagstaff.

If you can, plan the trip as a day visit from one of those towns. You can combine it with the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams or with a South Rim tour. Status can change, so check with the National Park Service before you book anything.

South Rim hotels in the park: El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge and others

The lodges as places to know, not places to book right now.

El Tovar

The El Tovar opened in 1905 and stands on the rim in the Village Historic District. Lodging there is suspended in 2026.

Grand Canyon Village โ†’

Bright Angel Lodge

Bright Angel Lodge is in the Village, and the Bright Angel Trailhead lies just west of it. The lodging is suspended in 2026.

Bright Angel Trail โ†’

Kachina, Thunderbird and Maswik

These three also belong to the park's lodge count. Maswik is the stop where the shuttle from Flagstaff arrives.

Yavapai Lodge

The sixth lodge in the count. Phantom Ranch lies in the canyon and is not part of that count, and it is closed. Trailer Village is an RV park, not a lodge, and it is closed until further notice.

Treat the suspension as the rule until the park announces otherwise. A new treatment plant is expected to start from mid-November, with distribution possible around Thanksgiving and about 45 days more to fill the tanks. Those dates are provisional and do not amount to a reopening date.

Mather Campground

Mather Campground is open as dry camping. There are no hook-ups, and with Stage 4 water restrictions in place there is no regular use of water. The camper services with showers and laundry are closed, and wood fires are not allowed.

Reservations are recommended from March to November, up to 6 months ahead, through Recreation.gov. Fifteen sites are given out on site each day from 8 a.m. Desert View campground is closed. Bring your own water, and use the designated mobile restrooms.

Tusayan, Williams and Flagstaff

How the nearby towns fit a South Rim plan.

Tusayan

The closest base, about 7 miles (11 km) south of the Village. The Tusayan park shuttle runs in summer only, so plan on driving or on a tour with pickup in other seasons.

Getting there โ†’

Williams

The Route 66 town is where the Grand Canyon Railway starts. The ride is 2 hours 15 minutes each way. For a different way to reach the canyon, see the train page.

Flagstaff

The shuttle from the Flagstaff Amtrak station reaches Maswik in the Village. Reserve at least 24 hours ahead.

Sedona

Sedona is 119 miles (192 km) from the South Rim and works better as its own stay. For lodging there, see where to stay in Sedona.
