Grand Canyon helicopter tours from the South Rim

South Rim flights start at the Grand Canyon National Park Airport (GCN) in Tusayan. The South Rim Terminal is at 3568 Airport Road, about 7 miles (11 km) south of Grand Canyon Village. You drive yourself to the terminal. There is no hotel shuttle.

These are scenic flights. They do not land at the bottom of the canyon. Trips that advertise a landing belong to the West Rim, which is a different region with different operators and a different drive.

Helicopter tour at the South Rim: two flights compared

Starting prices per person in 2026. Both leave from Tusayan.

FlightFlight timeFromLanding
Shorter flightAbout 25 to 30 minutes$309โ€“
Longer flightAbout 40 to 50 minutes$359โ€“

Prices change by date and are not fixed annual rates. A variable fuel surcharge can be added at check-in, so treat the starting price as a guide and not as the final total.

For most first-time visitors, the shorter flight is enough. Choose the longer flight if you want more time over the canyon and the budget is not the limit. Flight time is the time in the air, not the time at the terminal.

Helicopter tour from the South Rim: what to expect

The route is set by flight rules, not by the pilot's choice.

Flight corridors

Tourist flights over the canyon use a federal special flight rules area with flight-free zones and fixed corridors. Zuni Point and the Dragon corridor are two examples. Operators may name their own routes, but none of them can fly anywhere. Do not expect an identical route on every flight, and do not plan around a particular viewpoint.

Weather

Wind, cloud and storms can change a flight or cancel it. No operator can promise clear weather. Look for the terms on rescheduling or refunds on your booking.

Seats

The weighing happens at check-in. If you weigh more than 299 lb (135.91 kg), an extra seat can cost $50 to $300, depending on the tour and the aircraft. A window seat or front seat is not guaranteed.

Children

Children aged 0 to 23 months can fly on a lap at no charge on the shorter flight. For older children, check the child price on the booking page.

ID and arrival

Bring a photo ID. The age from which an ID is required is 16 or 18 depending on the operator, so confirm it for your booking. Arrive at the terminal on your own, in good time before your slot.

Drones

Personal drones are not allowed in the national park. Commercial scenic flights are a different thing and follow their own rules.

South Rim flights and West Rim trips

The Skywalk is outside the national park on tribal land. It is not a South Rim attraction. The drive from the South Rim to the West Rim is roughly 250 miles (400 km), about 5 hours as a rough guide.

If you want a helicopter trip with a landing, you need a West Rim product. For flights from Las Vegas, see helicopter tours from Las Vegas. For the wider Arizona picture, read the Grand Canyon helicopter tour guide.

If you only have the South Rim on your trip, a flight from Tusayan fits well before or after time at the rim. Plan the flight before a long drive or a late dinner, so you are not rushing to the terminal.

Plan your South Rim day around the flight

Tusayan is outside the park, so a flight does not by itself get you into the park.

Park entry

If you also visit the rim by car, the 2026 fee is $35 per private vehicle for 7 days. People aged 16 and over who do not live in the United States pay an extra $100 per person, unless a valid pass covers it.

Where to stay

Lodging run by the park concessions has been suspended since 31 August 2026 because of flood damage to the water line. Tusayan, outside the park, is not affected.
