Is the Grand Canyon South Rim open?
Yes. The South Entrance and the Desert View East Entrance are open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and the park status is open. That is the short answer, and it is not the whole story. Open does not mean that every building, trail and service is running.
Since 31 August 2026, lodging run by the park concessioners has been suspended because of flood damage to the water line. Water use is restricted, and the Phantom Ranch area and the Colorado River bridges are closed. If you want to see the canyon without staying in the park, a guided option such as a Grand Canyon South Rim tour avoids most of the planning.

Water restrictions after the flood
A flash flood on 29 August 2026 destroyed the water intake and damaged about 40 percent of the old pipeline between Phantom Ranch and the North Rim. The South Rim is under Stage 4 water restrictions. Bring water with you and use the designated mobile restrooms.
Tanker trucks are carrying water at the moment. A new treatment system is expected to start from about 16 November, distribution might begin around Thanksgiving, and filling the tanks would then take about 45 days. These are planning dates and can change. Do not read a reopening date for lodging into them.
Grand Canyon North Rim status
The North Rim is a separate area, far from the South Rim by road.
Limited day visits
The North Rim allows limited day visits until 30 November 2026 or the first major snowstorm. The campground and general store are closed for the season, and there is no fuel in the park.
The 2025 fire
The Dragon Bravo Fire began on 4 July 2025 and hit the Grand Canyon Lodge and the surrounding area hard. The area was stabilized in autumn 2025, with selective demolition. The former lodge is not available as lodging.
Road closures
Cape Royal Road and Point Imperial Road are closed from sunset on 15 October to sunrise on 3 November 2026.
South Rim or North Rim?
The two rims are about 4.5 hours apart by road. For a first visit, the South Rim has the Visitor Center, the free shuttles and the village services.
Getting there โDoes a government shutdown close the park?
Not automatically. During the federal shutdown from 1 October to 12 November 2025, roads and viewpoints generally stayed accessible while basic services were limited, and facilities that can be locked could stay closed. If a funding lapse is in the news before your trip, check the park alerts for the services you rely on, such as the Visitor Center or the shuttles.
For hiking conditions, see the hikes page. For fees on arrival, see the entrance fee page.
Is the Grand Canyon open? Frequently asked questions
Is the Grand Canyon closed right now?
No. The South Rim and both approach roads are open around the clock. Parts of the park are limited, namely lodging, water, several trails and Lipan Point, and the North Rim is open only in part.
Can I still visit if the park lodging is suspended?
Yes. Entry and the viewpoints do not depend on the lodges. Many visitors stay in Tusayan, about 7 miles (11 km) south of the village, or in Williams or Flagstaff. See where to stay.
Is the North Rim open?
Only in part. Limited day visits are possible until 30 November 2026 or the first major snowstorm. The campground and store are closed, there is no fuel, and the Cape Royal and Point Imperial roads are closed until 3 November 2026.
Can I hike to the river?
No. The Bright Angel Trail is open from the rim only to Mile-and-a-Half Resthouse, and the South Kaibab Trail to Tipoff. The river bridges and Phantom Ranch are closed. See hikes.
Do I need a reservation to enter?
No. General entry needs neither a reservation nor a timed-entry ticket. The upper floors of the Desert View Watchtower use a free timed ticket on site.
Is this the official park status page?
No. This is an independent guide with no connection to the National Park Service or the park concessioners. Conditions change, so check the current alerts of the National Park Service before you travel.
