Getting to the Grand Canyon South Rim

The South Rim is reached by road. From Flagstaff it takes about 90 minutes to the South Entrance, from Williams about 60 minutes and from Phoenix about 4 hours. These times do not include queues, stops or winter delays. The South Entrance and the Desert View East Entrance are open around the clock all year, and general entry needs no reservation.

You can also come without a car. A shuttle connects Flagstaff and Williams with the park, and the Grand Canyon Railway runs from Williams to the Historic Village. If you only have one day and no car, a Grand Canyon day tour from Las Vegas handles the whole trip.

Flagstaff to Grand Canyon by shuttle

A shuttle service runs from Flagstaff and Williams to Maswik in the Village. From Flagstaff, buses leave the Amtrak station at 7:45 a.m., 12:45 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. and reach Maswik at 9:30 a.m., 2:45 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. Return buses leave at 10:00 a.m., 3:15 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. Every stop needs a reservation, and at least 24 hours of notice is advised.

Fares start at $49 from Flagstaff and $39 from Williams per adult. Trips towards the park add an $8 park fee, and since 5 May 2026 a $2 fuel surcharge per passenger applies. Ask whether the non-resident entry fee is included. Because in-park lodging is suspended in 2026, check that a given departure runs before you book a trip around it.

Phoenix is reached by phone booking with a change in Flagstaff. Since October 2026 there is no shuttle between Sedona and Flagstaff.

Main airports

Scheduled flights serve Phoenix, Flagstaff and Las Vegas. From there you drive or take a shuttle. Check the current flights and frequencies with the airlines.

Grand Canyon Airport in Tusayan

The Grand Canyon airport sits outside the park in Tusayan and has limited air service. The helicopter flights over the South Rim start there too, from the South Rim terminal at 3568 Airport Road. You get to the terminal by yourself, as there is no hotel shuttle.

Tusayan

Tusayan lies about 7 miles (11 km) south of Grand Canyon Village and is outside the park, so the in-park lodging suspension does not apply there. A park shuttle to Tusayan runs in summer only, so do not count on it in autumn or winter.

Park shuttles

The shuttles are free with your entry. The Blue Route links the Visitor Center, lodges, campgrounds and Market Plaza from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in autumn, and the Orange Route serves South Kaibab and Yavapai. Pets are not allowed on park shuttles, but assistance dogs are. The South Kaibab Trailhead has no parking, so use the Orange Route or the Hikers' Express.

Williams parking

Rail guests can park free in Williams. A tour with pickup or the shuttle spares you the search for parking at the canyon.

Entry cost

A private vehicle pays $35 for 7 days in 2026. Each visitor aged 16 or over who is not a US resident pays an extra $100 unless a valid pass covers it.
