Grand Canyon Village at a glance
Grand Canyon Village is the main settlement on the South Rim. Its Historic District holds the best-known buildings on the rim: El Tovar, Hopi House, Kolb Studio, Lookout Studio and the Depot. El Tovar opened in 1905 and Kolb Studio in 1904. This is also where the free shuttles meet, where the Bright Angel Trail starts and where the Grand Canyon Railway arrives from Williams.
Lodges in the park are currently suspended, which changes how you plan a stay (see below). If you arrive by train, the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams brings you to the Depot in the Historic District. For a faster view of the canyon, Grand Canyon helicopter tours leave from Tusayan, not from the Village.

Grand Canyon Village lodging in 2026
Lodging and visiting are two different things.
What is suspended
Since 31 August 2026, the lodges run by the park concessioners are suspended because of flood damage to the water line. These are El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge, Kachina, Thunderbird, Maswik and Yavapai Lodge. Do not plan a stay in any of them until they take bookings again.
What is not affected
The suspension of lodging does not close the whole district. You can still visit the Village. Tusayan, outside the park, is not affected by the park's measure.
Where to sleep instead
Use Tusayan, Williams or Flagstaff as a base. See where to stay for distances. Check the current status with the National Park Service, because reopening depends on repairs to the water system.
Our pick: arrive by train
The railway arrives in Grand Canyon Village, with a guided bus tour of the rim.
Hand-picked tours, booked through GetYourGuide. Prices are indicative starting prices in US dollars (as of October 2026). Tap a tour for live availability and the current price in your currency.
Grand Canyon tours from the South Rim
Bus tours, jeep tours and helicopter flights that include the South Rim, with live prices and availability.
Historic District: what you can visit now
These are the current hours in the Historic District. Hopi House and Lookout Studio are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Kolb Studio from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The El Tovar dining rooms and lounge are closed for now, while some shops are open. The buildings are close together, so a short walk along the rim takes you from one to the next.
Verkamp's Visitor Center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The main Visitor Center, a short distance east, has fall hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; see Mather Point for how to get there.

The Hikers' Express leaves Bright Angel Lodge at 6, 7 and 8 a.m. Pets are not allowed on park shuttles, but service dogs are. Weather can pause service. The schedule above is for the fall season, so check it again for your date. For most visitors, the Blue and Orange routes are enough to cover the Village, Mather Point and the Kaibab trailhead.
You can read more about the Orange stops on Mather Point and the Red Route on Hermit Road.

Bright Angel Trailhead and ranger walks
The Bright Angel Trailhead is just west of Bright Angel Lodge. If you drive, the park suggests Lot D at the Backcountry Information Center, about 0.4 miles (0.65 km) on foot from the start. From the rim the trail is open only as far as the Mile-and-a-Half Resthouse. There is a drinking water tank at the trailhead. Read Bright Angel Trail before you set out.
In fall 2026 the ranger programs are free: a daily Rim Walk from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. that starts at the Bright Angel Trailhead and a Geology Talk at the Yavapai Geology Museum. They can be cancelled in bad weather or lightning.
Water and services
Stage 4 water restrictions apply in the park after the August flood. Bring your own water, use the designated mobile restrooms and do not rely on taps. Mather Campground is open for dry camping without hook-ups, showers and laundry are closed, and Trailer Village is closed until further notice. Wood fires are not allowed.
Fees for the park are on the entrance fee page. If the Village is one stop on a longer journey, our sister guide helps you plan an Arizona road trip beyond the park.
