Best time to visit the Grand Canyon South Rim

The best time to visit the Grand Canyon depends on what you want to do. The rim is open every day of the year, and each season trades something for something else. Winter has snow and short days. Spring brings crowds in spring break weeks and late frosts. Summer has the warmest days and afternoon thunderstorms. Autumn is drier on average, with cold nights.

Some choices also depend on what is running. The Grand Canyon Railway from Williams changes its departure time in November, Hermit Road changes how you reach it in March and December, and several services in the park are limited in 2026. Details on all three are below.

Before 10 a.m. or after 2 p.m.The easier times to drive in on a busy day
March, April and Memorial Day to Labor DaySpring break and the main summer season, the most requested weeks
July to early SeptemberThunderstorm season, often from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

For most people who want walking weather without the monsoon, May, June and September are the easiest months. If you accept the cold, winter is an option too. Spring break in March and April is the one stretch to avoid if you dislike crowds. These are averages from a weather station, so a given week can differ.

Hiking

Heat is the issue in summer. The river near Phantom Ranch is often above 100 °F (38 °C), and the park advises against hiking between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in summer. A day hike from the rim to the river and back is not advised, especially from May to September. In winter, trails ice over and traction aids are recommended.

The train from Williams

The regular timetable departs Williams at 9:30 a.m. from January to October and at 8:30 a.m. in November and December, with a 2 hour 15 minute ride each way. There is no regular canyon train on 25 December. The Pullman car runs only from March to October.

From 1 March to 30 November private vehicles are not allowed on Hermit Road and you use the Red Route shuttle. From December to February vehicles under 22 ft may drive it, if snow allows, and the shuttle does not run.

What is limited in 2026

These limits apply whatever month you choose.

Lodging run by the park concessioners has been suspended since 31 August 2026 because flood damage hit the water line, so most visitors sleep in Tusayan, Williams or Flagstaff. The inner canyon is limited too: Phantom Ranch and the river bridges are closed, and the Bright Angel Trail is open from the rim only as far as the Mile-and-a-Half Resthouse. Do not plan a rim-to-rim hike. Lipan Point is closed from 22 June to 23 December 2026. Check the current status with the National Park Service before you travel. The status page and the lodging guide have the details. If you are building a longer Arizona trip, the best time to visit Arizona compares the rest of the state.
